These are first year plants grown in pots all season from seed. Bearing rosettes of hairy leaves. Gray-green in color, oblong to lanceolate, each soft leaf measures 4 to 12 inches long and 1 to 5 inches wide. This herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial has a deep taproot.
They are known as an herb with many health benefits. The a tablespoon of dried leaves steeped as a tea, with honey and lemon helps still a cought.
This perennial has attractive foliage, and the flowers of the Mullein are also a multi-functional herb. These plants were started from seed the past spring. They can be grown in pots, as I found out. Only 6 plants are sheltered under grow lights in a cool area from the winter freeze.
I have started new tiny seeds that will not be available for a few months; they need time and care to become the plants you see in the other photo.
Dehydrate the washed leaves and store them in an air-tight jar. Then to make a hot soothing tea when a cold or cough develops. About a tablespoon of dried leaves to a cup of hot water steep 15 minutes add honey and lemon to taste. This tea quiets a cough for a long while. Research the many health benefit of the common Mullein plant.
